Homemade wholewheat Apple crumble with low fat vanilla custard

Hi guys.  How are you all doing?

I haven’t blogged about desserts in a while, so I decided to start again.

I am very conscious by the fact that a some people simply shy away from the last part of the menu, because they don’t want to overdo it or simply afraid of the calories in it.

Not to worry, you can still eat dessert, just simply opt for the low-fat option or better yet, head on home and have your home-made low-fat dessert! 😉

Today’s menu is Apple crumble and vanilla custard.  (All low-fat and healthy ingredients used)

Let’s begin


For the filling
3 Bramley apples (cooking apples)
1 tablespoon of demerara sugar
1 teaspoon of water

For the Crumble

1 cup of Wholewheat flour
1/3 cup of Demerara sugar
1/3 cup of Butter

For the Custard
2 Egg yolks
2 cups of Semi skimmed milk
1 tablespoon of Vanilla extract
2 teaspoon of Cornflour

Medium sized pot
Oven proof dish

Preheat the oven to 180 degree’s

Wash the apples, core (remove the seeds) peel and cut it into semi small pieces.  Pour water over it and add salt to stop it from browning.

Next place the pot on fire, drain the water from the apple, add it to the pot,  add 1 tablespoon of water to it, add the honey and cook until it becomes soft. (10 minutes)

Mix the flour and butter, (for the butter, see my picture below) until the consistency is like that of breadcrumbs.Add the sugar and set aside until its ready to be used.

Check on the apples, once soft remove from the cooker, pour the contents into the oven proof dish.

Then finally pour the flour mixture over it. Spread it evenly, pop it into the oven. (180 degrees) bake for 25 minutes.


Put a medium sized pot in fire, Pour in the milk and vanilla extract.  let it simmer.

Next mix the last two table-spoon of milk with the corn flour. Mix until no clumps remain. Next add the egg yolks and whisk until smooth.

Pour the simmered milk into the yolk mixture. Whisk and then pour back into the pot and keep whisking until the mixture becomes thick.

Next check on the crumble. Once baked,  remove it from the oven and let it cool down.

Serve with the warm custard for an enjoyable treat.
