My Stewed Beans 

Hi everyone, hope you are all good? So today I will be making stewed beans. This isn’t the regular Nigerian beans that you may be used to, this is made with proper sauce that the beans will be cooked in finally:

 I love this stewed beans because of the flavour that it packs. It’s that good. It can be eaten in on its own, or with some homemade soft dinner rolls. I have a Peppersoup Dinner Rolls recipe, be sure to check that out. When you pair both together you have an explosion of flavour, texture aroma that is sure to keep you asking for more. 

I made this with my own combination and it’s a winner for me, try it and let me know what you think, I am sure your guests will ask for more. I have below some benefits of beans, makes sure you incorporate that into your lifestyle, it’s great source of Carbodydrates and protein.

Ok let’s get started shall we. 


  • Beans
  • 2 large Tatashe 
  • 2 atarodo
  • 1 very large 
  • 2 medium sized tomatoes 
  • 2 Onions (1 large and 1 small onions)
  • 2 Knorr cubes or maggi 
  • 1 cup of Beef stock
  • 1 cup of Chicken stock
  • 1 small medium can of Tomato purée (very optional)
  • Bite sized Gizzard or kidney ( I used gizzard) 


  • Large pot 
  • Wooden spoon

Prep time: 3 hours-overnight 

Cooking time: 2 hours

Total time: based On prep time.


Pick the beans and rinse until water is clean. Soak in warm water for 3 hours or overnight. (Soaking helps reduce cooking time and also helps in eliminating the residue from pesticides (if any) in the beans (that’s why you see a foamy water when you cook without soaking) this is what causes gas in most people) 


After soaking, rinse again and add the beans to the pot.
Pour about 2 litres of water, Add the sliced onions, dry pepper and cover the pot. Cook uniterupted for 1 hour.

Whilst that is boiling, blend the peppers and one of the onions and boil. Allow to boil for the 30 minutes on medium to low heat 

Once boiled set aside. And wait for the beans to be cooked


After 1 hour if the beans cooking
Next stage 

In another pot, add the oil and let it heat up. 


Next add the 2nd onions. Fry on low heat for 5 minutes

  . Next add the gizzard and continue to for for another 3 minutes. 


Add half a cube of the stock cube


Next, add boiled pepper, 


Add 1 of the teaspoon of smoked crayfish


Mix well

 Now add the sauce to the beans 



Once all has been added, mix together thoroughly. 

Add the stocks (chicken and beef)

Cover with foil paper, reduce the heat to the lowest and cook for the next 50 minutes. (Foil helps in keeping the heat locked in to allow even cooking)

After 50 minutes, it should look like this.


Give it a gentle stir and check for salt
Once you are satisfied with the taste,close the lid and cook for the last 10 minutes. 
Remove from the heat and let it rest. 

It’s ready to serve. I really enjoyed making this stewed beans and what’s more you dont have to feel guilty about oil and whatnot. Although let’s remember that everything should be done in moderation 😉
